India bans 59 Chinese apps including TikTok, Helo, WeChat.
The India government announced the ban on the 59 Chinese apps (full list below) Chinese companies have long been suspected of building backdoors in their hardware and software, one reason why many governments across the world have been uneasy at the prospect of deploying Chinese-made 5G networking equipment.
A statement by the information technology ministry said a decision had been taken to block 59 applications “since in view of the information available, they are engaged in activities prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order”. The move comes amid a countrywide call from traders and civil society to boycott Chinese products and services after the June 15 clashes.
It said the Ministry of Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about the misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers that have locations outside India.
27 of these 59 apps were among the top 1,000 Android apps in India last month, according to the mobile insights firm, data of which an industry executive shared with TechCrunch.
